Adjournment

I have had positive and negative team experiences.  In the positive experience, the adjournment consisted of a party and unofficial ceremony.   The group had a good time and achieved its goals.  During the adjournment, the group was happy and members wanted to continue working together.  In the negative experience, the adjournment was abrupt. The group members had a lot of conflict and when the project was over, people simply left.  There were unresolved issues in the groups, and members did  not get along well.  As a result, the group members did not have any type of  adjournment ceremony.  Therefore, the adjournment phase is affected by the group experience.

  1. Tammy,

I, too, have had both positive and negative experiences. Even in the negative experiences there are things that we can learn from the experience so that it is hopefully not repeated for the next group in which we participate. When groups stay in the storming stage, it seems that the adjourning stage can be quite uncomfortable. People recognize that it was a negative experience and just want to finish the project and move on.

Leaving a group with unresolved issues leaves the team with a negative experience. As a part of a team or group member you would rather leave a group on a positive note and it makes the experience much better for everyone.

  3. Tammie,

In a sense, it is good that you have had both positive and negative adjournment experiences. The positive allows you to see how the process should go and benefits of adjourning in an appropriate manner. While the negative experiences allows you to grow professionally and realize the work that still needs to be done within this stage. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

  4. Tammie,

What do you think could have been done so there were not unresolved issues?
